The system of Usui Reiki was discovered and developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. Dr. Usui was born in 1865 in Japan and studied extensively as he traveled throughout Japan, China and Europe. Dr. Usui studied with Tendai Buddhist monks learning the martial arts and a healing technique called Kiko, which is similar to Qigong.

During a difficult time in his life, Dr. Usui returned to his Tibetan teachings and to experiences on the holy mountain of Kurama Yama. He fasted, prayed and meditated alone for twenty-one days while on the Holy Mountain. It was during this time that a great spiritual energy came down into the top of his head and he became enlightened about his troubles. This energy was said to have brought with it, Reiki Ryoho, which is the ability to heal.

Dr. Usui developed and taught the Reiki healing technique to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi and he to Mrs. Hawayo Takata who eventually, in 1938, brought the Reiki system of healing to the United States.

Reiki practitioners receive special attunements, which open the energy centers or charkas in the body, enabling that person to channel the higher amounts of the universal healing, loving energy. The energy passes through a purified channel in the practitioner, which has been opened by the attunements.

When receiving a Reiki treatment you will typically feel deeply relaxed, peaceful or even euphoric, you may feel tingling or pulsing through your body. You may feel sleepy or settle into a deep meditative state. You will also feel heat from the hands of the practitioner. For some the Reiki treatment will affect the emotions more so than the physical being. This is because Reiki finds the issues that you are most in need of healing these may not be the issues we think need healing. Often physical problems have emotional root causes. Reiki will often go first to the deepest issues and then work outward to the associated problems over a series of treatments.

Some people may experience strong emotions or even tears during a Reiki treatment. This response is usually an emotional release. Reiki treatments can bring up and help release unresolved emotional issues that have been buried for many years. The Reiki energy can be draining and for this reason it is important to drink a substantial amount of water after a treatment. Because Reiki can bring up old emotional issues, the water also aids in flushing out those issues faster.

Reiki has aided in healing anything and everything you may need help with, Reiki has been successful in treating multiple sclerosis, heart disease, cancer, cold and flu symptoms, insomnia, poor memory and even lack of confidence.
