Reflexology – Pressure Point Healing
Reflexology is the practice of massaging points on the feet and hands to relieve tension and treat illnesses. Reflexology is an ancient Chinese healing technique, which comes from the same tradition as Acupressure and Acupuncture. Reflexology as with Acupressure takes what seems to be a less aggressive approach to healing than orthodox medicine. The ancient Chinese physicians believed that an illness was caused by a number of factors, including an inner problem that had weakened the body’s natural defenses. Reflexology seeks to heal these problems by strengthening the body, removing any obstacles to well-being and improving the life energy flow.
Reflexologists work on all the symptoms of an illness, to make a patient more comfortable while dealing with the deeper issue. What we don’t do is work on the symptoms alone since suppressing the symptoms will simply force the problem to express itself in some other way. If you continually suppress the symptoms without tackling the root problem, the ailment will go on getting worse, causing ever more serious affects and finally damaging the entire system. In the same way no general practitioner would teat the outward symptoms of a serious infection without prescribing drugs to clear the infection itself. However, until very recently, orthodox medicine has not recognized that diseases can stem from more subtle agents than bacteria, viruses and parasites.
Medical science has found cures for heinous diseases, however, they have not solved all of our medical problems. Since the antibiotics that cured history’s most deadly diseases have been used for every trivial infection, new strains of bacteria have evolved which are able to resist them.
People are now looking for alternatives and practices that will compliment orthodox medicine. We are searching for natural treatments for our ailments that are more complementary to our body’s resources, such as Reflexology, which is a powerful non-invasive and very effective healing technique.
Western doctors are just starting to get to grips with a phenomenon called Psychoneuro-immunology or PNI, which is believed to be the effect the mind and body can have on each other. The new field of PNI is turning up evidence that our emotions play a vital role in our physical health. This is no surprise to Reflexologists. Like many complimentary
Practitioners, they have always been clear about the role emotions play in healing or harming us. Depression and anger are the best-known problems. However, all kinds of emotions can tip the balance.
As with any Alternative medicine, Reflexology should not be considered as replacement for professional medical treatment, a licensed medical practitioner should be consulted in all matters relating to health and especially in relation to any symptoms, which may require diagnosis or medical attention.
